About the Artists
Sarah McCarthy Grimm is an interdisciplinary artist who has maintained a studio practice since graduating with a degree in Visual Art from Brown University in 2013. In 2014, she took a cross-country road trip alone to explore the landscape photographically, and decided to “stay for a year and see what happens” in San Francisco. Eleven years later, she plunges daily at Ocean Beach and can’t imagine leaving her creative community in the Outer Sunset. Her process includes painting, printmaking, photography, writing, and participatory projects.
Her work has been deeply informed by the ambiguous loss of her only sibling, Chelsea Grimm, who disappeared from a rural road in Arizona in September 2023. She seeks to alchemize her grief into visual art that feels soothing, conjuring the spiritual medicine she needs and hopes it can help others. In collaboration with visionary artist Jamae Tasker, she designed Ocean Calling, a public installation at Ocean Beach giving people an opportunity to call lost loved ones and convene around shared grief. Ultimately, her core intention is to reinforce a healing interconnection within humanity and between humankind, the ocean and the cosmos.
Sage Maxwell is a surfer and artist in the Outer Richmond with an office and painting studio at Third Realm. He is building Pistachio by day, a furniture store point-of-sale startup, and oil painting on nights and weekends. Beyond the canvas, he has also designed clothing, painted surfboards in collaboration with David Vernor, and casted metal into jewelry and other forms. Past shows included live screen-printing with custom painted surfboards on display at Pemulis Water & Power in the Outer Sunset.
His paintings featured at Third Realm were all painted here at his studio over the last six months since first getting into oil painting. They reveal a range of sources of inspiration from found objects to characters from other eras in his journey into a new medium. “If the journey isn’t the reward, turn back.” – Endless Breakers.
